Choosing the Best Home Fitness Gaming Console: Wii Vs. Playstation 3 Vs. Xbox 360

The concept of merging fitness and gaming is becoming increasingly popular these days, and everyone wants to know which gaming console serves the purpose best. To find out the answer, it is necessary to identify each individual’s competency level and what kind of exercise they seek.

You can currently get three motion detecting gaming consoles for fitness. The Wii was designed exclusively as a gaming console that uses motion detection for all games, while the other two adapted their consoles to include motion sensors. Xbox 360 has the Xbox Kinect while PlayStation 3 has the PlayStation Move.

Wii vs PS3 vs Xbox 360

All three have similar gaming titles but operate in slightly different ways. To choose the best gaming console for your fitness, the major differences in motion detecting and the limitations that each has in the best gaming titles must be addressed.

The Wii

The Wii ReviewNintendo introduced the first motion detecting console in the form of Wii. It operates with a three dimensional wireless controller based on movements. Movements of the Wii remote are registered via Bluetooth by a sensor that you have to attach above or below your screen. There is also an accelerometer with the remote to improve motion detection.

The standard gaming console is made to encourage fitness gaming, but Nintendo took over the home fitness gaming world with the release of the Wii Balance Board, which is similar to a weighing scale and measures weight as well as center of balance. It was launched along with the Wii Fit and with the Wii Fit Plus. The combination of the Wii remote and the Balance Board is compatible with several Wii gaming titles.

Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus were a huge hit in the fitness industry and more than 40 million were sold. Wii is the perfect way to get started with home fitness training by doing some yoga stretching exercises, simple cardio and strength training. The Balance Board is an added advantage to keep track of your progress and weight.

The PlayStation 3 Move

The PlayStation 3 Move ReviewWork on PlayStation Move started as early as in 2001, although many think it is a copy of Wii. The method of operation is similar – with a motion controller held by players.

The Controller for PlayStation Move also uses a sensor to detect positions, but it is more developed than the Wii controller. The movement measurements and orientation readings are more specific and precise. In addition to accelerometers and internal sensors, the Move controller also includes an orb that the sensor can track. The orb is able to calculate velocity and distance at any time. Even though it is similar to the Wii, the PS Move offers more precise and accurate gameplay compared to Wii.

The PlayStation Move is a fitness console intended for a different set of audience than the Wii. It does not feature a Balance Board, but contains dual controllers for various fitness games. EA Sports Active 2 is one of the more popular games that works great on the Move, even though it is actually a Wii game but due to the similar controllers it works fine on both. If you are looking for some real energetic and vigorous exercise, this game on the PlayStation Move is an excellent choice.

The Xbox 360 Kinect

The Xbox 360 Kinect ReviewThe Xbox Kinect uses a completely different technique for gaming than the Wii and PlayStation 3 Move motion detecting consoles. Instead of sensing the movements of a controller, the Xbox Kinect detects the movements of your whole body and does not feature a controller at all. That is why their tagline is “You are the controller”. This makes it possible to do more detailed exercises while the Kinect tracks and records your body movements. While you can trick the Wii and PS Move by waving around the controller more than you move your body, this allows far more accuracy in tracking your moves.

Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 is an example of the kind of fitness games you can get on the Xbox Kinect. It gives a whole lot more scope for intense and vigorous workouts than the Wii Fit Plus, because movements from your entire body are being registered. The sensor can detect if any step of the workout is left incomplete, so you have to be totally committed to the game and cannot cheat with a controller. For example, if an exercise requires you to move both your arms and legs, the Wii and PS Move will only be able to detect one of them, but the Kinect can sense all moves.

Which Games Console Should I Buy?

Before you decide which gaming console to buy, you need to consider several factors. If you will be using it for other activities in addition to fitness games, then your game style and title preferences need to be taken into account. If your only purpose is fitness, the decision-making process is more straightforward.

If you are a beginner or only want some gentle fitness training, the Wii is a suitable choice. It is good for rehabilitation or as an introduction to mild exercise. If you want more intense training, the other two are better options.

The Kinect is the most desirable option for serious fitness junkies and athletes who want a complete workout for the body. It won’t let you miss a step, and can help identify if you go wrong with a maneuver until you correct it.

The third option is the PlayStation Move, which will have to serve as a substitute for the Kinect if you want a high intensity exercise but do not have enough space for it. It does not equal the Kinect in the gaming experience, but will work fine. It is also the most popular gaming console to own.
